As our first movie task, we worked on "The Ratcatcher", a science fiction short story by Alexander Grin. It is a mystical story set in the civil-war era Petrograd. The main character is a man approaching his middle age, who tries to make it and keep a clear mind in the country ravaged by the cold, hunger and typhoid fever. As the story develops, it slowly pulls the reader deeper and deeper into the realm of the protagonists visions and attacks of illness.

I researched the era and the Russian conditions at the time and found suitable locations as the result. I designed the movie in pastel twilight-style colours and stressed the openness, bleakness and devastation in the settings. One third of the movie takes place in a large deserted paper factory. The protagonist finds a small office there, which becomes his place of residence for a long time. I also made a maquette of the room, because a pavilion should be built in the room because of its small size.
