“Väike Eyolf” on lugu armukadedusest, vanema- ja lapsevahelistest suhetest, hoolivusest ja prioriteetidest tänapäeva maailmas. Allmerside pere elab Norra fjordi ääres uhkes majas mäenõlval. Pere ainus laps Eyolf on varases lapsepõlves vanemate tähelepanematuse tõttu juhtunud õnnetuse tagajärjel ühest jalast halvatud, mistõttu ei ole tal võimalik ka teiste poistega koos mängida. Mägedest saabunud kirjanikku, Eyolfi isa Alfredi, saabub koju tervitama ka tema poolõde Asta, kellel on mehega eriline side. Alfredi jõukas naine Rita tunneb armukadedust nii Asta kui ka oma poja vastu. Kui majja saabub ootamatu külaline Rotieit, kes teenib elatist rottide merre meelitamise ja uputamisega ning Eyolf talle järgneb ja samuti upub, järgneb teises vaatuses pikk leinaperiood. Selle käigus püüab iga tegelane ennast uuesti tundma õppida ning enda eesmärgid ja prioriteedid paika seada.

Lahendasin loo tänapäevases võtmes, kuna teema on aktuaalne ka nüüdisajal. Kostüümide puhul püüdsin valida igale karakterile meelepärased ja tema iseloomule vastavad rõivad, mis sobituksid meie tänavapilti. Kujunduse puhul inspireeris ja võlus mind Norra mägede ja fjordide pilt, mis on juba näidendisse sisse kirjutatud. Kujutan laval põhjamaade stiilis heledat ja avarat ning modernset elutuba, maast-laeni tervet tagaseina katvate akende ja liugustega, kust pääseb terrassile. Ruumikujunduses kasutan üksikuid suuri mööbliesemeid, heledat puitpõrandat ja kuivavaid toataimi. Akendest paistab vaade ülevalt mäenõlvalt alla fjordile ja silmapiiril paistvatele mäetippudele. Vaate jaoks kasutan tagantprojektsioonina fotot Norra suvistest mägedest ja fjordist mäenõlvade vahel, et luua vaatajale illusioon, nagu ta viibiks ise Allmerside majas nende suhtekeeriste keskel.

“Little Eyolf” is a story about jealousy, the relationship between a parent and child, caring and priorities in the modern world. The Allmers family lives in a fancy house on the foot of a hill near a Norwegian fiord. Eyolf, the only child in the family, is paralyzed from one leg as the result of an accident that happened to him in early childhood due to neglect by his parents, which is why he is not able to play with the other boys. The writer who arrives from the hills – Alfred, the father of Eyolf – is welcomed home also by his half-sister Asta, who has a special connection with the man. Alfred’s wealthy wife Rita is jealous towards Asta as well as his son. When an unexpected guest Rat-Wife arrives at the house, who earns her living by luring rats into the sea and drowning them, and as Eyolf also follows her and drowns, a long period of mourning follows in the second act. During that, each character tries to learn to recognize themselves once again and set their goals and priorities.

I solved the story in contemporary key, since the issue is also current nowadays. I tried to pick the costumes, which would fit in our street-style that would be congenial with each person and correspond to their character. In design, I was inspired and awed by the picture of Norwegian mountains and fiords, which was already written in the play. On the stage, I depict a Nordic-style light and airy modern living room with windows covering the whole back wall from floor to the ceiling and sliding doors leading to the terrace. In space design, I use single large pieces of furniture, light wooden floor and drying houseplants. The windows open a view downhill to the fiord and the mountain peaks in the horizon. For the view, I used a back-projection summer photo of Norwegian mountains and a fiord in the middle of the mountains, to create an illusion to the viewer as if they were in the Allmers house in the middle of the relationship turmoil.
